Russell Dean Johnson was born on June 3, 1930 to Carl and Anna (Jelle) Johnson in Delavan, Minnesota. He graduated from Delavan High School in 1948. On November 16, 1951, he enlisted in the United States Army where he served in Korea. Russell was honorably discharged on December 10, 1959. Shortly after, he was united in marriage to Betty Mae Sellers. This marriage was blessed with 3 sons. They shared many years of marriage before Betty Mae passed away in 1996. Russel then married and shared his life with Betty Ann Burton.

After his honorable discharge, Russell worked at the Northfield Liquor Store as a bartender, Sheldahl’s in Northfield and at the Koch Oil Refinery, where he worked until retiring in 1993. Russell was a member of the Northfield VFW, and Stanton United Methodist Church. He enjoyed gun collecting, wood carving, fishing, and archery. Following retirement Russ spent time gardening, watching and feeding birds, reading, and spending time with his grandchildren.

On Friday, December 11, 2015, Russell passed away at the Three Links Care Center in Northfield at the age of 85. A memorial service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, January 23, 2016 at Stanton United Methodist Church. Military honors to follow. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

Russell is survived by wife, Betty Ann Johnson of Northfield; son, Scott (Carrie) Johnson of Elko; step children: Vicki (Mark) Roline of Spring Valley, WI, Barb Lund of Kenyon, Jacqueline (Daron) Dulac of Webster, Colleen (Kyle) Rapp of Cannon Falls and Paul Olson of California; his loving grandchildren and great grandchildren; nieces, nephews other relatives and friends. Preceded in death by his parents; first wife Betty Mae Johnson; sons, Gus and Warren; and his siblings.

Arrangements are with the Bierman Funeral Home of Northfield.
