Clara Markuson, age 98 of Elko, passed away Sunday, June 28, 2015 at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis. Funeral Services will be 11:00 am Friday, July 3rd at the Bierman Funeral Home in Northfield with burial at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis. Visitation will be Friday 1 hour prior to Services.

Clara Mary Markuson was born July 25, 1916 on the family farm in New Market Township, daughter of Henry and Mary (Scheffler) Deutsch. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in New Market and attended St. Nicholas Catholic School. Following school she stayed on the farm helping her parents until her marriage to Ernest “Ernie” Raymond Markuson in 1946.

They made their home in Elko where they were blessed with 5 children. After the death of Ernie on December 10, 1963 Clara remained at their home in Elko and when the kids were older she began babysitting for a number of families in the Elko area. In addition she worked at Uncle Tom’s Cabin Food Truck at the Elko Speedway during the racing season for a number of years.

Clara enjoyed polka dancing, playing cards, bingo, and being with family and friends. She always had a large vegetable garden and did a lot of canning and freezing of her produce. She was a lifelong member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church.

Clara is survived by daughters Carol Ponto of Faribault, Dolores (Gary) Swedin of Webster, Jane (Michael) Fischbach of White Bear Lake; sons Earl Markuson of Elko, Jim Markuson of Northfield; sister Alice (Julius) Friedges of Prior Lake; brother Elmer Deutsch of Northfield; grandchildren Chris (Bree) Markuson, Annie and Lindsey Markuson, Denice (Clinton) Stocker; and 5 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Ernie; 4 brothers and 1 sister.
