Della Gunderson, age 86 of Northfield, passed away Monday evening at the Northfield Hospital following a brief illness. Funeral Services will be 11:00 am Friday, January 9th at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Northfield with burial at Oaklawn Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 4-7:00 pm at the Bierman Funeral Home in Northfield and at the Church on Friday 1 hour prior to Services.

Della Mae Sommers was born May 12, 1928 in Faribault, daughter of Glenn and Alice (Vail) Sommers. She was baptized and confirmed at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Faribault and graduated from Faribault High School in 1946. She worked as a telephone switchboard operator in Faribault following school. Della was united in marriage to Lester Gordon Gunderson on May 22, 1948 at Trinity Lutheran Church.

They made their home on a farm south of Northfield where Della enjoyed gardening and raising farm animals. She also worked for a number of years at Younkers Restaurant in Dundas and later Sheldahl’s in Northfield. After moving to a new home close to Northfield Della and Lester camped and traveled in an RV, visiting all U.S. states except Alaska. They spent 14 winters in Florida and traveled to Asia and Europe during their retirement years.

Della was a charter member of the Sons of Norway, was active in the St. John’s Lutheran Church Lydia Circle, was an excellent cook and homemaker, enjoyed spending time with her family, and was a great help to people in need.

Della is survived by her husband of 66 years, Lester; daughters Joyce Gunderson of Guam, Carol (Gerry) Selter of San Jose, CA, Mary (Dwight) Holderfield of Pinehurst, NC; son David and fiancée Marion Johnson of Faribault; brothers Raymond Sommers of Faribault, Lester Sommers of Bloomington; sisters Dorothy Fischer of Faribault, Delores Strasser of Apple Valley; sisters-in-law Sharon Sommers of Faribault and Loretta Siler of Northfield; 10 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren with 2 more expected soon; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; son John; sister Betty Hoppe; brothers Donald, Everett, and Roger Sommers and sister-in-law Delores Sommers.
