Donald Oliver Peterson, age 88 of Northfield, passed away peacefully February 9th, 2015 at The Three Links Care Center. Funeral Services will be 11:00 am Wednesday, February 11th at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Northfield with burial at Oaklawn Cemetery. Donald was born to Casper and Julia (Lockrem) Peterson on June 14th, 1926, the youngest of five children. Donald was confirmed at the “old St. Peter’s Church” in Northfield and attended Northfield Public Schools. Donald grew up on the family farm east of Northfield. As a life-long farmer he meticulously raised award winning hogs, a variety of livestock and crops.

Donald was a very progressive farmer, original board member and lifelong member of the Rice County Pork Producers, active in the Farm Bureau, member of the Purebred Poland China Association and the South Long Lake Association. The family had one of the first SPF (Disease Free) hog operations in the area. They held the title of the 1960 World Champion Barrow with their Purebred Poland China Barrow. A Chinese delegation visited the farm to select top hogs from the Peterson Herd to take back to their country in an effort to create a strong top-of the line blood line.

His farming practices showcased his land stewardship and conservation practices. Donald worked closely with the University of Minnesota and was well versed in the identification of plants, birds and tree species.

As a bit of a prankster, Donald was well known for his sense of humor and imagination. He was always on hand to help out a neighbor in need or discuss the latest farm crisis. He was an avid fisherman and sportsman enjoying his times “up north” at the South Long Lake cabin located on Mogenson Shores, outside of Brainerd.

Donald is survived by his wife, Margaret (Vandenheuvel) of 68 years; daughter Katherine (Myron) Stevens of Brainerd; sons Mark (Pam Kalina) of Northfield, Mike (Kay Nickles) of Northfield; sister-in-law Hazel Peterson of Northfield; grandchildren Ann Laue (Mike Andres), Steve (Laura) Larkin, Jennifer (John) Gilles, Laura (Alan) Sommervold, Joe Peterson, Kristen Zimmer, Blake Peterson, Shane Peterson, Sarah (Nate)Peters; great grandchildren, Brittney, Aaron, Nicole Laue, Dylon, Cole, Brant, Allie Larkin, Arielle and Ian Gilles, Charolette (Lottie) and Ingrid Sommervold, Preslea and Brekken Zimmer and Marlee Peters. Donald was preceded in death by his parents, son Russell, brother Casper Leroy “Bud” Peterson; sisters Hazel Topp, Ellen Warner, and Doris Nelson; brothers-in-law George Topp, Robert Warner, and Chuck Nelson.

If so desired, memorials may be sent to the Randolph FFA Alumni Foundation, as Donald was a lifelong member.
