Doris was born February 8, 1919 on the family farm in rural Dakota County to Casper and Julia (Lockrem) Peterson. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Northfield. Doris attended country school near the family farm and then continued her schooling at Northfield Public Schools.

One June 30, 1939 she married Charles “Chuck” Everett Nelson at the Farmington Lutheran Church. They lived and farmed in the Northfield (Sciota Township) area for 60 years with their four daughters. Doris helped with all the farm chores, drove tractor, raised 250 laying hens and delivered eggs to customers in Northfield for many years. She had a large vegetable garden, apple orchard and beautiful flower gardens. She and Chuck believed strongly in supporting the agricultural community. They exhibited grain and corn at the state Fair and also arranged the Dakota County Agricultural Exhibit at the State Fair for twenty years. She was actively involved in 4-H herself when young, and later in life was a 4-H leader and encouraged her own children to be involved as well.

Doris was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. She was known for her excellent cooking and her endless devotion to helping friends and family. She was a lifelong member of St. Peter’s, where she was active in her Circle, active with the Rebekah Lodge and belonged to the neighborhood Birthday Club. Together, she and Chuck loved dancing, playing cards, travelling, and visiting with family, friends and neighbors. A visit with Doris was always sure to include good food and good conversation.

Doris is survived by daughters Joann (Frank) Suchanek of Blooming Prairie; Betty Johnson of La Jolla, California; Carol Miller of Northfield; LuAnn (John) Ista of Northfield; ten grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren; brother Donald (Margaret) Peterson and sister-in-law Hazel Peterson of Northfield; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Chuck; infant daughter Jeanette; sisters Hazel Topp and Ellen Warner; and brother LeRoy “Bud” Peterson.

Memorials are preferred to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, the Northfield Retirement Community and the Northfield Senior Center.
