George W. Paulson, 95, of Northfield passed away peacefully on September 11, 2015 at the Northfield Care Center. George was born in 1920 on his parents’ farm in Forest Township, Rice County. The family stayed on the farm after his father’s death in 1925, and George graduated from Northfield High School in 193_. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1941, reaching the rank of Chief Petty Officer, and serving at the air station in Minneapolis and at various bases on the East coast and on aircraft carriers in the Atlantic as an airplane mechanic and trainer. After the war he and his brother Lincoln grew the family farm into a successful and progressive dairy operation on the eastern shore of Circle Lake. They were joined by George’s son, George, and after Lincoln retired, he remained active on the farm with his son until 1999.

George married Joyce Walstad in 1949, and the couple had three children and were married for 52 years until her death in 2001. George and Joyce moved to Northfield in 1976, where he lived on Highland Avenue for 34 years. In 2010, he married Lyla Arneson (Halverson) and they resided at Kildahl Park Pointe until his death.

George was active in community affairs, including being a member of the Northfield School Board for [12] years and chairman for many of those years. After retirement he was an active member of the Christdala Church Preservation Board. He enjoyed time with his grandchildren, and coffee with his many friends at the Quarterback, VFW and Millersburg Store.

George was preceded in death by his parents Emil and Alma Paulson (Pearson); wife Joyce; son George Paulson of Northfield; brothers Lincoln of Faribault and John of Alexandria; and sisters Marjorie Freiberg of Minneapolis and Iona Hildebrandt of Rosemount. He is survived by wife Lyla of Northfield; sister Maelene Nelson of Eden Prairie; son Jeff (Deb) of Minneapolis; daughter Linda Johnson (Ken) of Lakeville; daughter-in-law LuJean Paulson, Northfield; and grandchildren Scott Paulson (Jen) of Northfield, Ryan Paulson (Molly) of River Falls, WI, Traci Johnson of Ann Arbor, MI, Mark Johnson, USMC (Amy) of Joshua Tree, CA, Lamont Mays of Minneapolis, Joseph Kaiser (Jen) of Cottage Grove, Jeff Kaiser (Megan) of Littleton, CO, and Megan Kaiser of Chicago, IL; and six great-grandchildren.

Visitation at Bierman Funeral Home, 1316 Division Street, Northfield, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday September 24, 2015 and at the church an hour before the funeral service. Funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 25, 2015 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 500 West Third Street, Northfield, with lunch served after the service. Burial will be at Christdala Evangelical Swedish Lutheran Church, twelve miles west of Northfield on Rice County Road 1, Millersburg, MN following the luncheon.

Instead of flowers, family prefers memorials to Christdala Church Preservation and Cemetery Association.
