Richard Allan Gill was born December 10, 1946, in Northfield, Minnesota, to William R. and Elaine (Neubauer) Gill. He attended Northfield Schools and spent his junior year in high school in Nuremberg, Germany, a time that had a profound effect on his life. He returned to Northfield and graduated from Northfield High School in 1964 and the University of Minnesota in 1966 with an associate’s degree.

On August 10, 1968, Richard married Patricia K. Stanton. After marriage they made their home in Northfield and started their family. They later divorced. Richard worked construction, and for several years was a foreman for Healy Construction in Faribault. In the mid 1980’s, he returned to school and received his certification as a code enforcement official. Richard worked for the City of Mendota Heights as a building inspector from 1986 until retiring in 2011.

As a father, Richard was always there for his children and supported them in so many ways. He enjoyed snowmobiling, NASCAR, and riding his motorcycle – especially on trips to Wabasha and Lake City. He was a man of many talents who could build or fix almost anything. He was a good conversationalist with a welcoming personality and infectious smile.

Survivors include his children: Ken (Sheila) Johnson of Prescott, Wisconsin, Allan (Nicole) Gill of Northfield, Eric (Samantha) Gill of Nerstrand, Amanda (Cam) Edmonds of Northfield; 6 grandchildren: Madeline and Ella Johnson, Dominic and Sydney Gill, Michael and Miranda Strandberg; his mother, Elaine Gill of Northfield; his brother, Tom (Virginia) of Northfield; 2 sisters: Carolyn (Ronald) Williams of Auburn Hills, Michigan, Diane (James) McCue of Apple Valley; nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his father and a sister in infancy.

Richard passed away with his family by his side on Monday morning, March 30, 2015, at the care center of the Northfield Retirement Community at the age of 68.
