Edgar Severson, age 97 of Northfield, passed away Sunday, August 30, 2015 at the Long Term Care Center of the Northfield Hospital. Funeral Services will be 11:00 am Friday, September 4th at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Northfield with burial at Meadow Ridge Cemetery in Faribault with Military Honors. Visitation will be 4-7:00 pm Thursday at the Bierman Funeral Home in Northfield and at the Church 1 hour prior to Services.

Edgar Oliver Severson was born April 26, 1918 on the family farm near Millersburg, son of Edwin and Bertha (DeMann) Severson. He attended Fox Lake Country School and then farmed with his parents until joining the Army in October of 1941. He served 4 years in the South Pacific, participating in 8 beach landings including the Solomon Islands, the Philippines, New Guinea, Mindanao, and Biak Island. He was wounded twice, receiving two Purple Hearts fighting the Japanese.

He was discharged in 1945 and returned to the Millersburg area. On October 18, 1945 he was united in marriage to Gretchen Mary McCracken at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Northfield and began farming in the Millersburg and Fox Lake area. In 1958 he began work at the Farmers Union Coop in their fertilizer division. From 1960-1963 Edgar owned a bowling alley in Mankato and from 1964-1968 they lived a short time in Winnebago and then Hutchinson as Edgar was manager of the Farmers Union Fertilizer Plants. In 1968 they moved to Northfield when he became the manager of the Fertilizer Plant with Cannon Valley Coop until retirement in 1983.

Edgar was an avid fisherman throughout his life and also enjoyed hunting. In retirement he loved to fish the local lakes. To remain busy he mowed lawns at the Northfield Cemetery for many years, drove the shuttle bus between St. Olaf and Carleton College, delivered Meals-on-Wheels, was active with the VFW and the Color Guard, was a member of the Lions Club, Past Commander of the Disabled American Veterans Organization in Faribault, and was a Church Usher at St. John’s.

Edgar Severson is survived by daughter Shirley (Maynard) Johnson of Prior Lake; son Tom Severson and special friend Patty Ratfield of Northfield; grandchildren Lisa Johnson of New York and Eric (Stacy) Johnson of New Prague; and great grandsons Aaron and Shane Johnson. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Gretchen; son John; brothers Lyle and Harland Severson.
