Ferdinand Volkert, age 85 of rural Randolph, passed away Monday, October 5, 2015 at his home following a short illness. Funeral Services will be 11:00 am Saturday, October 10th at Trinity Lutheran Church in Northfield with burial at Northfield Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-7:00 pm Friday at the Bierman Funeral Home in Northfield and at the Church on Saturday 1 hour prior to Services.

Ferdinand Walter Volkert, son of Herbert and Minnie (Bremer) Volkert, was born May 17, 1930 on the family farm near Rosemount, MN. He grew up helping with chores on the farm and attended St. John’s Parochial School. In 1942, during WWII, the family relocated when their farm was acquired as part of the Gopher Ordnance Works Ammunition Plant. They settled on a farm in Waterford Township near Northfield. Ferd then began school in Randolph where he participated in baseball, basketball, and track graduating in 1949.

On June 6, 1951 he was united in marriage to June Elizabeth Damann at the Salem Evangelical United Brethren Church in Farmington and they made their home on a farm near Randolph where they farmed and raised their 4 children. In 1969 Ferd began working as a realtor with Land Merchants in Cannon Falls. He obtained his Real Estate Broker’s License and soon moved his office to State Wide Realty in Farmington. He also began Sovereign Investments which focused on apartment complexes that he owned and managed.

He was a member on a number of boards and organizations including the School Board of District 195, Randolph, Waterford Township Board, and the Dakota Electric Association Board of Directors. In his free time he was an avid Twins fan, enjoyed watching his grandkids in their sporting events, going out to eat, visiting with people, and family gatherings. He will be remembered as a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather.

Ferd is survived by his wife June; daughters Pam (Darrell) Greenslade of Winter, WI, Jean (Bruce) Soule of Lakeville; sons Lee (Candace) Volkert of Northfield, Vern (Becky) Volkert of Hampton; sister Adeline (Bud) Carlson of Marcell, MN; sister-in-law Florence Volkert of Dennison; grandchildren Eric (Tammi) Greenslade, Amy Greenslade, Chelsey Volkert, Jackie Soule, Brighton Volkert, Shelly (Tony) Clemons, Brady Soule, Angela and Brooks Volkert; great grandchildren Morgan and Mckinlie Greenslade, and Teddy Clemons; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Hildegarde Gramsey and Bernice Spomer; brothers Herbert Jr., John, and Clarence Volkert.

In lieu of flowers memorials preferred to Trinity Lutheran Church or the donor’s choice.
