Greta Lilleberg Smith, age 84, was born and raised in southwestern Minnesota. She graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1953, having earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Bacteriology with high distinction. Greta immediately was hired as a supervisor of medical technology students in the laboratories of the U of M hospital. She married John J. Smith of Little Falls, Minnesota, in November 1955 when he returned from active duty with the U. S. Army. Greta continued to work until their first child arrived and then became a full-time mother and homemaker. The family lived in several Minnesota cities while John pursued his career with the Bell System. In 1986 following John’s retirement, the couple moved to Northfield.

During her early years in Northfield, Greta was active with the Arts Guild and served on its board. She took up quilting and became a member of the Northfield Quilters. She joined the Garden Club. And she became an enthusiastic and regular participant in the Northfield Elder Collegium. In fact, if the Elder Collegium awarded degrees, Greta surely would have earned one. The Smiths moved to the Northfield Retirement Community in 2013. Greta passed away at Southview Suites of the Northfield Care Center Community, on September 1. She is survived by her husband John; son Todd Smith; daughter Kris and her husband Joe Wenker; grandson John Wenker and his wife Sammi Miller; and grandson Peter Wenker.

Greta loved classical music, particularly opera; she was a skillful cook and an adventurous reader; and she had a great eye for color and fabrics. Above all, she was a devoted wife and a champion of her children and grandchildren. She will be greatly missed.

No public service is planned. A private family service will be held in Little Falls. The family requests that any memorials be directed to the Northfield Elder Collegium.
