Leil Martha Heggelund Westerman was born August 19, 1925, in Madison, South Dakota, to Mathias and Ophelia (Thompson) Heggelund. She was raised on the family farm, attended country school, and in 1943 graduated from Estelline High School. Following high school she studied Nursing at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She married Raymond Westerman at her parents home on August 1, 1950. After marriage they lived in Golden Valley and Bloomington until 1963, when they moved to their home in Webster Township, Rice County. Over the years Leil worked as a specialty nurse, as a nurse at area nursing homes, and as a nurse at the Northfield Hospital. She retired in 1982.

Leil was a member of the Cannon City Church, the Christian Women’s Luncheon Club, and a bible study co-leader for Stonecroft Outreach. She spent years dedicating her time to help other which included sewing over 3,000 ditty bags. She enjoyed reading, gardening, crossword puzzles, playing scrabble, quilting, sewing, cooking and canning. She was selfless, always concerned about others, loved the Lord above all else, and had the heart of a servant. She will be greatly missed.

Survivors include her husband of almost 65 years, Raymond; 5 children: Gloria of Northfield, Betty (Bob) Ohmann of Northfield, Leann (Nathan) Knibb of Eagan, Dawn (Michael) Schletty of Rosemount, Leland (Paula) of Dundas; 5 grandchildren: Scott (Lara) Cornell, Markina (Andrew) Bemis, Jacob Knibb, Christopher (Teresa) Schletty, Elizabeth (Jeremiah) Simonson; 6 great-grandchildren: Havyn, Adaline, Brixton, Maxwell, Alida and Kaia; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother in infancy.

Surrounded by the love of her family, Leil passed away Saturday morning, June 13, 2015, at Reflections on the Three Links Campus, at the age of 89.

Funeral services will be 1:00P.M., Friday, June 19, 2015, at the Bierman Funeral Home in Northfield. Interment will be in Cannon City Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-7PM Thursday, June 18, 2015, at the funeral home and will continue on Friday one hour prior to the service.
