Richard “Rick” Rice, age 58 of Northfield, passed unexpectedly Sunday, June 21, 2015 at Regina Hospital in Hastings. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am Friday, June 26th at the Church of St. Dominic in Northfield with burial at the Church of Annunciation Cemetery, Hazelwood with Military Honors. Visitation will be 4-7:00 pm Thursday June 25th at the Bierman Funeral Home in Northfield and at the Church on Friday 1 hour prior to Services.

Richard Lowell Rice was born June 29, 1956 in Northfield, son of Richard and Marlys (Benham) Rice. He attended school in Northfield and as a child enjoyed riding bike, swimming at the pool, hanging out with his friends, and fishing and hunting with his family and friends. In 1974 he enlisted in the U.S. Marines and served 4 years during the Vietnam War. He reached the rank of Corporal and served on the USS Hancock and USS Chicago off the coast of Vietnam.

Following his discharge he returned to Northfield and first worked for his brother-in-law, Bob Winter of his dairy farm. Later he began working construction, first with Kevin Underdahl Construction, followed by United Building Center in Faribault, and then Pro Builders in Lakeville. In 2007 he began working for Anchor Glass in Shakopee where he was still employed.

On July 31, 2000 he was united in marriage to Kathleen Mary Novotny in Faribault and they made their home in Northfield. Rick had a wonderful sense of humor and loved spending time with his family, especially his grandson Weston. He enjoyed baseball, especially the Dundas Dukes, and recently watching his son play in tournament baseball. He loved to collect classic toy cars. He continued fishing and hunting throughout his life and was looking forward to deer hunting with a crossbow this fall.

Rick Rice is survived by wife Kathleen; daughters Madison Rice, Nastacia Maas, and Karissa Maas; son Austin Rice; grandson Weston Florea; sisters Candace (Roger) Williams of Dundas, Lila (Robert) Winter of Northfield, Denise O’Brien of Holly Hill, FL, his twin sister Rochelle Frank of Prescott, WI; brothers Jerry Rice and friend Mary of Northfield, Raymond Rice of Northfield; mother-in-law Harriet Novotny of Webster; sister-in-law Debbie Johnson and partner Mike Thompson of Venice, FL; brothers-in-law Gary (Jean) Novotny of Northfield, Russell (Kristine) Novotny of Northfield, Steve (Katie) Novotny of Belle Plain, and Greg Novotny of Lonsdale. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister LaVonne McCorkell.
