Joan Carol Truwe Starkweather was born October 27, 1933, in Winnebago, Minnesota, to Milton and Dorothy (Stiles) Truwe.  She was baptized and confirmed at Amboy Presbyterian Church and graduated from Amboy High School in 1951.  On June 8, 1952, at Amboy Presbyterian Church, Jo married her high school sweetheart Donald Lewis Starkweather.  After marriage they lived in Chanute, Illinois, while Don served in the US Air Force.  Following his honorable discharge they returned to the Mankato area, later moving to Sherburn where they lived for 8 years. They lived several years in the Twin Cities and Dallas before moving to Northfield in 1992.

Jo was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church.  Both locally and internationally, Jo, along with Don, were avid birders, always having a pair of binoculars accompanying them, be it family camping trips or Sunday drives.  In retirement, they enjoyed travel, including trips to Scandinavia, Western Europe, and Costa Rica – which included watching sea turtles lay eggs on the beach at midnight.  Jo loved music of all kinds and reading in her rocking chair.

Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Don; 5 children: Dawn (Duane) Northagen of Buffalo, Roxane (Le) Carson of Apple Valley, Bret (Dawn) of Burnsville, Rhonda (Mark) Read-Boecker of Belle Plaine, Kristan (Jackie) of Austin, Texas; 12 grandchildren: Brittany (Kurtis) Van Kuelen, Trevor (Sarah) Northagen, Jonathan (Angie), Matthew (Audra), and Kristopher Carson, Torrie, Michelle (Grant), Thomas (Carly) and Larrisa Starkweather, Jesse Read, Katie (Trevor) Wilson and Jamie Read; three great-grandchildren, Madison, Jake, and Lauren; her sister, Judy Johnson of Walker; her sister-in-law, Ginny Truwe of Mankato; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Janice Kuester, her brothers Jack and Jerry Truwe and her son-in-law Randy Read.

With her husband and family by her side, Joan passed away at home in Northfield, on Sunday morning, January 31, 2016, at the age of 82.
