Norman Clifford Halverson was born on May 7, 1922 to Richard and Thea (LaVanger) Halverson in Lonsdale, Minnesota and grew up in the Trondhjem Church community. Norman married Eleanor (Ella) J. Meinke of Webster on September 13, 1950.

Working on farms as a young man, he went on to work at Carleton College Farm, and hauled both cans and bulk milk for Land O’Lakes Creamery. He worked for the City of Northfield on the City Works and Parks, and for many years at Lampert’s Lumber Yard in Northfield.

Not fully retired until age 86, he and Ella took care of their grandchildren, Elise, Sam and Eva two days a week, and that close bond led to the famous Friday Happy Hours (drinks and supper) which have been taking place regularly for more than 25 years! Norman loved family and fun, and was happy to attend any gathering – as long as the “program” wasn’t too long. He loved playing cards, telling stories, and his coffee buddies at Lamperts and the Big Steer. He has many wonderful friends at Trinity Lutheran Church in Northfield- the Church from which he and Ella were married and where they have been members for more than 60 years.

On Thursday, March 24, 2016, Norman passed away peacefully at the care center of the Northfield Retirement Community.

Funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM, Thursday, March 31, 2016 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Northfield. Interment in St. Joh’s Cemetery in Webster. Visitation will be from 4-7 PM on Wednesday, March 30, 2016 at the Bierman Funeral Home in Northfield and continues one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.

Halverson of Burnsville, and Sherie (Gary Mrachek) Swanson of Minneapolis; grandchildren: Elise (Lucas) Swanson Smith, Samual (Amber Mathison) Swanson and Eva Norton; great granddaughter Emily Elaine Swanson; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Nancy, my thoughts are with you and your family. My sympathy to you all. Your father sounds like he was a great, fun, guy. Always remember the best of who he was.

Norm was my next door neighbor of over 34 years. Over that time, he reminded me again and again of what it means to be a “good” neighbor – thoughtful, helpful, genuinely warm and friendly, and full of humor. We will miss him and his smile. Thank you for all you have given us Norm.
