Oliver Neese, known to friends and family as “Olli”, passed away on Thursday, May 5th, 2016 after an 8-day battle in the Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) intensive care unit due to anoxic brain injury. He was 45 years old. Originally from Hamburg, Germany, Olli came to the U.S. in 1998 as an exchange student at Saint Olaf College in Northfield, MN.  Shortly thereafter on one fine evening, he met his future wife, Jacie Cooper, at the Reub ‘N’ Stein, flashed his mega-watt smile and as they say, “that’s all she wrote.”  The two have a son, Maximilian J Neese, 12.  During Olli’s stay at the hospital, his mother, Maria, his brother, Andreas , his immediately family and a few close friends were able to say “goodbye for now.”  We are proud that Olli was able to donate his lungs, liver and kidneys for those in need. A ‘Donate Life’ flag flies at HCMC on 6th St in downtown Minneapolis in his honor.

True to his social and gregarious nature, Olli had many friends in town as well, and the outpouring of love and strength from everyone has been heartwarming to the family. A lover of the finer things, like Glenlivet single malt scotch, quality cigars, and jazzy music by the members of the Rat Pack (Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, as well as Louis Prima), we will host a celebration of life in Olli’s memory in high style and everyone is welcome.

We will start the celebration from 3pm – 5 pm on Sunday, May 15, 2016, at the Northfield Eagles Club, which has kindly allowed us to use their space and celebrate. Olli, Jacie, and baby Max lived in an apartment above the Eagles for several years. Olli & Jacie also used to bartender there. This part of the celebration is family friendly and food will be provided. Then, per Olli’s wishes for a New Orleans style funeral, we will walk in a procession behind a live brass band through the downtown streets of Northfield to the VFW, where Olli worked, played cards, hung out with friends and kept the bar stools warm. At the VFW, starting at 6:30, we will host Texas Hold ‘Em tournaments, a card game Olli loved. There, we will eat, drink whiskey and smoke cigars in a salute to the friend we lost too soon.

We love you, Olli.  Present tense.
