Margaret Elizabeth “Betsy” Bierman was born on May 9, 1924, in Chicago, IL, daughter of William & Esther (Sherman) Shedd. She was raised in Chicago until her father passed away when she was 11 years old. She moved with her mother and two brothers to Indiana and later to Rochester, Minnesota where she graduated from high school.

Betsy started at Carleton College at the age of 16, graduating in three years. She met her future husband, John, during her time at Carleton. They got married on May 24, 1944, at All Saints Episcopal Church while John was serving in the Army Air Corps during World War II. After his discharge, they made their home and raised a family in Northfield.

Mother of 12 children, Betsy was a homemaker for many years. She was an exceptional seamstress and cook, making clothes and preparing meals for their large family. Betsy was involved in their children’s activities: PTA, 4H, and their sporting events. She was very active in the church, participating in the Altar Guild and teaching Sunday school, and served as a member of the P.E.O., and the D.A.R. After her youngest child began school she started her second career, working at the family business, Bierman Furniture and Floor Covering, where she worked until she was 91.

Betsy and John were adventurous travelers to all parts of the world, which they truly enjoyed. They also spent many winters in Florida, frequently visited by all their children and grandchildren, making for very special memories. Betsy and John were blessed with 28 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren, making for a full house during holidays and family events.

Betsy is survived by her 12 children: John of St. Louis Park, Peter and wife Diane of White Bear Lake, Mary Patterson and husband David of Northfield, Jim and wife Mary of Northfield, Jane Bierman Lytle and husband Paul of Hancock, MI, Joe and wife Kris of Cannon Falls, Susan Bierman and wife Bonnie of Lakeville, Chris of Denver, Robert and wife Ellen of Apple Valley, Charlie and wife Dawn of Rochester, Margaret Cloud and husband Steve of Northfield, Jennifer Bierman and husband Jim Griffin of Wilmette, IL. Betsy was preceded in death by her parents; husband; infant daughter Amy; and brothers, William and Richard Shedd.

Arrangements are with the Bierman Funeral Home of Northfield.

Betsy must have been one of the kindest smartest women whoever lived. She was a big part of most of my summers growing up. If anyone was ever lookin for a role model on how to live, she is one. She taught me how to pluck a goose, in her garage. She also took me to the fair in faribault several times…of course it was all because I was friends with Charlie, but I count myself lucky for every minute. We will all miss you Betsy.
