Evangeline “Vangie” R. Johnson was born February 25, 1917, the daughter of Nels and Rose (Mostu) Peterson.  She attended school in Atwater and with the drive being so long, Vangie would stay during the school week in town earning enough money for room and board.  Her Father would then come and bring her home on weekends.  After Vangie graduated from high school, she traveled to California where her future husband, George Johnson lived in Long Beach.  Vangie would take the red car (electric street car) every week, an hour and a half to work.  The couple were united in marriage on April 24, 1937 and shared nearly 69 years of marriage.

The couple moved to Lake Elizabeth Township, near Lake Lillian, Minnesota where they farmed and milked cows.  Farming was a struggle, but they made ends meet.  The couple had four children, Dale, Dwight, Fayetta, and Janice.  They worked hard on the farm, but Sunday was a time to tend church and enjoy the afternoons playing ball and other activities.  They later moved to Atwater and eventually to Willmar.  George also worked as a carpenter and the couple built the majority of two lovely homes themselves.  In 1985, the couple moved to Victor, Montana and enjoyed the open spaces, mountain views and fishing.  In 2003, they moved to Northfield to be closer to family.  George died in 2006.

Vangie was a perfectionist.  One week before she passed she told her son, Dale, to straighten her sheets on the bed.  She enjoyed many things, but she especially enjoyed gardening, fishing, cooking and baking.  It was common for her to bake as many as 14 loaves of bread every week for her family.  The grandchildren were a huge part of her life.  She was a much loved Grandma to them and will be dearly missed.

On Friday afternoon, June 3, 2016, Vangie passed away at Three Links Care Center with her family at her side at the age of 99.  Vangie is survived by a son Dale (and Leeanna) of Black Canyon City, AZ; a daughter Janice (and Lance) Bicknell of Woodstock, Ontario; a daughter-in-law Barbara Johnson of Nerstrand; nine grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.  She is also survived by a sister Beth Anderson of Eveleth.  She was preceded in death by her husband; a son Dwight; an infant daughter Fayetta and two brothers Donald and Joel.

Funeral services for Vangie will be held on Thursday, June 9, 2016, beginning at 10:30 AM at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church with the Reverend David Weeks officiating.  Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service in the church.   Burial will be at the Lake Lillian Baptist Cemetery at 2:30 PM on Thursday.

No words can be said about mine and vangies relationship. She was a big part of my day and routine. Its not about the job when you get to work, its about taking care of friends and families. Some days are harder then others. But in the end you end up building relationships with them. You become family. Vangie ment alot to me. Im so glad the family let me sit with them to be with her in her final hrs. Vangie will be truly missed . Marigold will not be the same without her. ♡♡♡
