Elaine Anne Gill was born March 26, 1921 in Wells, MN, daughter of Ben and Anna (Rathai) Neubauer. At an early age her family moved to St. Paul where she attended St. Joseph’s Academy graduating in 1939. As a young girl, she loved to speed skate and spent many hours at the outdoor rink. Following school, she worked as a key punch operator.

Through a mutual friend, Elaine met William Richard Gill of Northfield and they were married on January 22, 1944 at St. Columba’s Church in St. Paul. After Bill’s discharge from the Navy following WWll, they made their home in Northfield. In 1963, she and Bill, along with their 4 children, moved to Germany where they experienced the German culture and fell in love with the beautiful sights. Upon their return from Germany, Elaine worked at Sheldahl and then Space Data in Northfield in the production of weather balloons until retirement. For the next 10 years, she and Bill spent winters in Sun City, AZ where they enjoyed golfing and visiting with the large number of Northfield snowbirds. Elaine continued to spend winters in Sun City after Bill’s death in 1997, including this past winter. She also loved to travel, enjoying trips to Germany, France, England, Isle of Mann, Ireland, Scotland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, New Zealand, and Hawaii.

Elaine loved playing cards, especially cribbage, going on long walks, golfing, dancing, and sewing. One summer, she sewed 80 pairs of pajamas for Northfield’s Christmas sharing project. She was active with her church, serving on a number of committees and was past president of the Rosary Society. She volunteered with many organizations and was on the original group that started the Hospital Auxiliary Book Fair. She participated in many blood drives in Northfield and Meals on Wheels. She loved crossword puzzles, reading, and baking mocho cakes, which was a family favorite that no one could master like she. The traditions she enjoyed with her grandchildren were making pudding, reading books, working on puzzles and playing Lewis and Clark at the Carleton arb. She was a gentle and beautiful lady who found pleasure with the little things in life. She loved her family and was so proud of them and their accomplishments.

Elaine Gill is survived by children Carolyn (Ronald) Williams of Auburn Hills, Michigan, Diane (Jim) McCue of Apple Valley, Tom (Virginia) Gill of Northfield; 11 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband William; son Richard; sisters Beatrice Doenges and Betty McKenny.

Memorials to the Northfield Senior Center.
