After a life most certainly lived to the fullest, Harley “Lee” Jefferson III, age 78, of Northfield, passed away peacefully Sunday, October 9, 2016, in his home.

Harley Wilfred Jefferson III, better known to all as “Lee” began life September 7, 1938, in Sparta, Wisconsin. Lee was born to Harley Wilfred “Bud” Jefferson Jr and Stella Elizabeth “Betty” Kniffen. His early years were spent in Sparta, surrounded by a close-knit family who all lived within a block or two of one another. When he was 10 years old, Lee’s family decided that Laura Baker School presented the best opportunity for Lee to develop his potential and receive loving care. Lee lived for more than 40 years on the Laura Baker Services campus and later in a home operated by LBSA in the Northfield community.

Lee was employed by Epic Enterprises until his retirement and held positions throughout the Northfield community. He was a long-time member of City Light Church and greatly enjoyed bowling, participating in Special Olympics, going up north to fish, and being a member of the LBSA choir.

Lee’s pure-hearted, compassionate love for people set an example for us all. It has often been said that he never met a stranger. He was outgoing and exceptionally friendly, and could not walk down Division Street without running into an old friend or making a new one. He treasured his relationships and his legacy will live on in the many, many people whose lives have been touched by his friendship and ear-to-ear grin.

Lee is survived by cousins, Tom Brigham in Colorado, Bill Jefferson in Wisconsin, and other family throughout Minnesota, Wisconsin and Illinois; his guardian and closest friend Kirk Moorhead; his caregivers at Laura Baker Services Association; and a multitude of friendships in Northfield and beyond.

A funeral service for Lee will be held Sunday, October 23, 2016, beginning at 3 PM at City Light Church with visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be held at a later date at Woodlawn Cemetery in Sparta. Memorials can be made to Laura Baker Services Association. Arrangements by Bierman Funeral Home. biermanfuneralhome.com
