Gerald was born August 29, 1933, in Northfield, the son of Andrew and Susie (Tschann) Cleland. He attended a one room schoolhouse near his home where he was the only member of his class.

In December 1954, Gerald enlisted in the United States Army and served in England during the Korean War. After receiving his honorable discharge in 1957, he returned to Northfield. Gerald was united in marriage to Mary Ann Ross on June 28, 1963 at Central Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. They lived in the city of Northfield for a short while before moving to rural Northfield. He founded Cleland Trenching and Tiling. Gerald loved his work and participated in it until the time of his death.

He loved to read, travel, play Euchre and work on word puzzles. Another favorite activity was taking care of his cats. He taught his children respect, saw the best in everyone and was a very humble man. He had a great work ethic and worked long hours. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Gerald is survived by his wife Mary Ann, his children David (Catherine) of Northfield, Elizabeth (Jay) Jones of Dayton, MN, Caroline (Erik) Slettedahl of Roseville, Daniel (Nicole) of Richfield, eight grandchildren Nathan Jones, Hannah Jones, Andrew Cleland, Spencer Petersen, Samuel Cleland, Emily Slettedahl, Kaitlyn Cleland and Leah Slettedahl. Jerry was one of the first neighbors we met when we moved here. He had deep family roots in this area and his pride in that, his land and his family was evident right from the start. What a pleasant, gentle and honest man he was! We always enjoyed our conversations that included stories about his earlier years when Jerry and another “partner in crime” attended local dances and enjoyed cold beverages together. We will miss seeing his mule driving down the road, his friendly wave and the entertaining chats. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Cleland family where Jerry’s fine qualities have been passed along to two more generations.
