David Daniel Sandquist was born May 19, 1948 in St James, MN, son of George and Agnes (Danielson) Sandquist. He was raised on the family farm by West Swedal, MN and attended a two-room country school through 6th grade and then St James High School graduating in 1966. Shortly after graduation he joined the U. S. Navy and went to San Diego for boot camp. He served aboard ship in Guam for 18 months and then 7 months along the Mekong Delta, South Vietnam. In 1970, while serving on The Iwo Jima which was the primary recovery ship for Apollo 13, he witnessed the reentry and recovery of the space capsule.

After the Navy, he returned to St James and then began business school in Mankato. During this time, he met Kathleen Mae Bielke and they were married on May 5, 1973 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in New Auburn, spending 30 years together until her death in 2003. They moved to Northfield to make their home and Dave began working as a CPA with the accounting firm of Reese, Winter and Associates in Northfield where he remained for over 25 years. In 2011 David suffered a stroke and had a long road of rehab in his recovery.

During high school Dave ran in track and cross country with some wrestling and in the summers helped his parents with a many year project building a family cabin on Norway Lake near Spicer, MN. Here he and his family enjoyed fishing and water skiing for many years. He also was an avid duck hunter at the cabin as well as hunting for deer and pheasants. He participated on trap shooting teams at Owatonna gun club along with a few others, winning numerous titles, was a long-time member of Ducks Unlimited, and purchased many Terry Redlin paintings. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, Northfield Sertoma, and the Northfield JC’s. He had a large collection of festivity buttons including a complete collection of Jesse James Days buttons. In his free time, he and Kathy enjoyed antiquing, weekends at their cabin, and spending time with their grandchildren.

David is survived by son Eric (Michelle) Sandquist of Elko; daughter Stacy (Eric) Holmgren of Lonsdale; brother Richard Sandquist of Madison, SD; sister Marilyn Holt of Lino Lakes; 6 grandchildren, Brandon Sandquist, Cortney Fischer, Emma Sandquist, Ashley Wallin, Tyler Sandquist, and Logan Holmgren and nieces and nephews.
