April Schaefer was born April 19, 1955, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Roy A. and Shirley J (Hewitt) Schaefer. She was confirmed in the United Methodist Church in Northfield. She graduated from Northfield High School in 1973. She attended St Cloud State College. Later she went to Rochester Community and Technical College to train as a ward secretary.
