Coral Audrey Peterson was born January 26, 1922 on a farm near Morristown, MN, daughter of Joseph and Catherine (Ensign) Thomas. Her father died of pneumonia 2 days after her 6th birthday. Her family moved to Faribault and 2 years later, her mother married her uncle Bert Thomas, and they moved to the Randolph area. Coral attended Randolph Public Schools and graduated in 1940.

On June 8, 1940, she was united in marriage to Thomas Alois Peterson (her best friend’s big brother) and they lived in Cannon Falls 1 year before moving to Northfield. Their marriage produced 3 boys: Joe, David and Edward and 3 girls: Delores, Judith and Evelyn. In 1954 they bought their farm south of Northfield.

On August 28, 1958 seven members of the family were returning from a short vacation to the Black Hills, when they were in a horrific car crash, which took the life of Judy, age 15 and Eddie, age 7. The survivors were hospitalized in Mitchell, SD for 7 weeks, returning to Northfield October 20th. Their lives were changed forever by this event. Their oldest son Joe, who had stayed home to do the chores, was able to begin college at the University of Minnesota in September because of the strong support of their large extended family and friends.

Thomas and Coral remained on the farm which was transformed to a crop farm, and after the children had left home they were able to take two trips to Europe which they enjoyed tremendously. Coral was a great homemaker and hostess who enjoyed cooking and baking for her family, sewing and quilting and especially gardening. Their family had always been very active members of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, and Coral was active with WELCA, Sunday School teaching, Bible studies, and mission work.

Thomas died December 1, 1980 and the farm was annexed into Northfield. Coral remained on the farm in a townhouse in the new Hidden Valley Addition. She enjoyed traveling with friends with a trip to Australia and New Zealand, and 2 bus trips to western areas of the US. She moved to the Northfield Retirement Community in 2003, living first in the Manor, then Parkview East and finally the Bluebird Unit in the Care Center where she passed away peacefully in the arms of her daughter Evelyn on March 28, 2017.

Coral is survived by son Joe (Penny) Peterson of Arden Hills; daughter Evelyn Thomas of Northfield; 5 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Thomas; children David Peterson, Delores Smith, Judith Peterson and Edward Peterson; sisters Elaine Sieben and Pat Carlson; brothers Jim and Bob Thomas; and infant great grandson Thomas David Peterson.
