Bernard Willard Canedy

U.S. Veteran

Bernard Willard Canedy was born in Dundas, Minnesota on December 6, 1930, son of Milo and Myrtle (Barnett) Canedy. He was raised in Dundas and attended school in Dundas. For 3 ½ years during World War II the family resided in Vancouver, Washington while his father worked as and electrician in the shipyard. After the war, they returned to Dundas where Bernard resided until 1964.

From 1947 to 1951 he worked for Krutchville Construction Co in New Prague, Minnesota as a laborer and carpenter until Bernie joined the Army January 19, 1951. He trained at Ft. Riley, Kansas and served in Korea during the Korean War. He was wounded in action on July 8, 1951 in Central Korea. He returned home after being in Army Hospitals in Japan, Colorado, and Minnesota. He was honorably discharged on January 26, 1952. He received the Korean Service Medal, Bronze Service Star, and the Purple Heart Medal.

After being discharged from the Army Bernie worked for a cab company in Northfield until he became employed by Fischer Construction Company in Apple Valley, Minnesota in 1956 as a truck driver. He became a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers on September 1, 1959. From September 1959 to December 1995 when he retired he operated heavy equipment for Fischer Construction Company. He worked on several sections of Interstate 35 and other roads in Minnesota, helped in the layout of the land for Burnsville Mall and removed snow for the railroad in St. Paul.

From the time he retired he enjoyed being with his family, going out for supper and 2 or 3 times a month for a pizza at Basil’s. He also enjoyed lunch at the L & M in Dundas with his friends.

On January 4, 1964 Bernie was united in marriage to Judith Ann Nelson of rural Northfield at Northfield Moravian Church in Northfield, Minnesota.

Bernie is survived by his wife of 47½ years Judith, his children Kay (Tom) Benzick of Kenyon and Mick (Karen) Canedy of Northfield, 6 granddaughters, Nicole Benzick of Rochester & Michelle Benzick of Kenyon, Katelyn, Ashley, Emily, & Lindsey Canedy of Northfield and 1 great grandson Gabriel of Rochester, sister Darlene Canedy of Northfield, sister Marie Waggoner of Roswell, New Mexico and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Florence Couch, Veronica Grant, and infant brother and sister.

Bernard Canedy, age 80, passed away Tuesday, August 02, 2011 at the Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis. Visitation will be at the Bierman Funeral Home in Northfield from 2 to 5 PM on Sunday August, 7 2011. Funeral services will be held at Main Street Moravian Church in Northfield, Minnesota at 11:00 AM on Monday August 8, 2011. Interment and military rites provided by the Northfield VFW Post 4393 will be held in Groveland Cemetery in Dundas, Minnesota.
