Elvah A. Fossum
(April 9, 1912 - February 6, 2011)
Elvah Fossum, age 98 of Northfield, passed away Sunday, February 6, 2011 at the Three Links Care Center in Northfield. Funeral Services will be 11:00 am Thursday, February 10th at Trondhjem Lutheran Church of rural Lonsdale with burial at the Church Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-8:00 pm Wednesday, February 9th at the Bierman Funeral Home of Northfield and at the Church on Thursday 1 hour prior to Services.
Elvah A Fossum was born on the family farm west of Webster, MN April 9, 1912, daughter of William and Anna (Keske) Wiese. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Webster and attended country school near their farm. Following school she began working at Carleton College in housekeeping.
On November 23, 1932 she was united in marriage to Raymond Fossum. Their first home was on the Fossum Family Farm near Lonsdale where they lived until 1956. It was during this time their four children were born. After leaving the family farm they moved into Webster. In 1957 they along with Stanley and Lyda Nelson established the Waterford Meat Market, which they operated until 1963. After leaving the meat market she worked at Mitchells Clothing Store and then as a cook at the Northfield Senior High School. After retirement she worked part time in the Coffee Shop at the Northfield City Hospital. In 1965 they built their home in Waterford where Elvah lived for 44 years, moving to The Three Links Apartments in February of 2009. She spent the last nine months of her life at the Three Links Care Center.
Elvah was a longtime member of the Trondhjem Lutheran Church, belonged to the Ladies Aid, and was an original board member of the Trondhjem Community Preservation Society. She enjoyed needlepoint and knitting and had knit afghans for all her children and grandchildren. She liked to play cards with family and friends and loved to spend time with her family. Elvah was deeply loved by her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Elvah Fossum is survived by sons Eldon (Barb) Fossum of Farmington, William (Jean) Fossum of Northfield; daughters Ramona (Elmer) Pumper of Northfield, Randa (Alan) Vogen of Lakeville; sister-in-law Beverly Wiese of Minnetonka; 12 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and special friends Reiney and Lorraine Lemke. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Raymond; brothers Helmer, Ralph, Norman, Ervin, and William Wiese; sisters Myrtle Aikin, Doris Pasek, Viola Nelson; and grandson Thor Vogen.
