Bernice Schendel, age 84, of Northfield, passed away Tuesday, July 30, 2019, at Three Links Care Center. Bernice was born on July 5, 1935, in New Richland, Minnesota, to Erwin and Esther (Tolzmann) Schendel. She grew up in Faribault, graduating from Faribault High School in 1953, where she played basketball and volleyball. Bernice Schendel, age 84, of Northfield, passed away Tuesday, July 30, 2019, at Three Links Care Center.

Bernice was born on July 5, 1935, in New Richland, Minnesota, to Erwin and Esther (Tolzmann) Schendel. She grew up in Faribault, graduating from Faribault High School in 1953, where she played basketball and volleyball. After earning her BA in Christian Education and Religion at Elmhurst College in 1958, Bernice worked in Christian education for 17, then 25 years in business, retiring in 2000 as the Executive Director of the Human Resources Management Association of Chicago, where she built the organization from 191 members to over 750. She moved to Northfield to be close to family. Bernice was a member of the First United Church of Christ and the American Association of University Women (AAUW).

She enjoyed cooking, walking, and reading.

Bernice is survived by her brother Elton (Diane) Schendel; sister-in-law Jeanne Schendel; her nieces Deb Keilen, Donna Schendel; and her nephews Mike, Scott and Adam Schendel, all of Faribault; her great-nephews Matt, Alex, Ian, Sam, and Zachary; and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers Milton, at infancy, and Hartley.

A celebration of Bernice’s life will be held on Wednesday, August 7, 2019, beginning at 11:00 AM at the First United Church of Christ, Northfield. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to First UCC, Rice County Habitat for Humanity, or the Salvation Army.
