Donald Sward, age 93, longtime resident of Northfield, MN and current resident of Lakewood Ranch, FL, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 10, 2018. He was born on June 13, 1925, in Rush City, MN, to Arthur and Francis (Pangerl) Sward. He was raised in Cambridge, and then moved with his family to St. Paul Park. Donald Sward, age 93, longtime resident of Northfield, MN and current resident of Lakewood Ranch, FL, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 10, 2018. He was born on June 13, 1925, in Rush City, MN, to Arthur and Francis (Pangerl) Sward. He was raised in Cambridge, and then moved with his family to St. Paul Park. He graduated from St. Paul Park High School in 1944, after which he joined the U.S. Army, serving in the European theatre during World War II. He received several medals, including Good Conduct, ATO, EAMETO, and the WWII Victory Medal.
After receiving his honorable discharge in 1946, Don returned to Minnesota and received his BA from the University of St. Thomas in 1950. He received his Master’s degree in media science from the University of Minnesota in 1966.
Don married Bette Waldron on February 23, 1957. They lived in Askov and were high school teachers there. They moved to Northfield in 1962 and Don took a teaching job with the Northfield Public Schools; he retired in 1991 after 35 years of service. He and Bette were members of Trinity Lutheran Church. Don enjoyed fishing, photography, reading, and spending time with family and friends.
Don is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Bill Glaves of Sarasota, FL; two grandsons, Justin (Beth) and Tyler Tumberg; his sister Ruth Kraft; many nieces and nephews; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Bette (2006), his sisters Frances O’Boyle and Mary Jean Kowitz, and his parents.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 18, 2018, beginning at 11 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church, with Reverend Brent Klein presiding. Interment with military honors will take place in Oaklawn Cemetery. Visitation will be held 4-7 p.m. on Friday, August 17, 2018, at the Bierman Funeral Home, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are preferred to the Union Gospel Mission or the Northfield Community Action Center.
