Donna Lynn Kelley, age 55, passed away on Friday, July 13, 2018, in Austin, MN after her abrupt battle with cancer.
Donna was born September 14, 1962, in Chincoteaque, VA to Robert and Joyce (Marshall) Matson. The family moved to Northfield when Donna was 3 years old. Donna earned her GED from Northfield High School and went on to obtain her CNA license. She was a passionate, caring, genuine, hard-working nursing assistant for over 20 years with the geriatric community. She worked at nursing homes, assisted living, and home health care in Northfield, Owatonna, and Austin. Donna’s children were fathered by Gregory Valek. Greg passed away when their daughters were very young. When Donna passed, she was widowed to her late husband Robert Kelley, who died in 2017.
Donna was always the center of attention. She was a “girly girl”. She loved dressing up, styling her hair, and taking baths. Donna was also a “handy woman”, self-sufficient and independent. She loved to decorate, remodel and work on projects in the yard. When visiting her, she would proudly tell you how she had built all her projects herself. Donna was witty, street smart, down to earth and had a great sense of humor. She always worked and was consistent and reliable with her job. Donna was very detail-oriented and loved to stay busy. Her hobbies were knitting, crocheting, gardening, swimming, and singing. She had a soft heart for animals, especially horses. She was a very affectionate mother and sister. She always told her girls how much she loved them. She will be dearly missed.
She is survived by her daughters, Jasmine Miller of Floyd, VA and Stephanie Valek of Minneapolis; four grandchildren, Diego, Keenan, Sequioa, Aisha; sisters, Lisa (Ross) Fischer of Northfield, Barbara Kniefel of Cannon Falls, Carmin Egeland of Northfield; step-mother, Judy (Rezac) Matson of Dundas; nephews and nieces. A very lovely woman who grew up under tough circumstances. Perhaps in another life an iconic actress or a model. Condolences to all from Andy Matson, cousin to the deceased.

Donna was my 1st cousin and very best friend growing up. We spent a lot of time in Way Park swinging and singing together in harmony to her favorite songs. Cher was the one I remember the most that she loved singing too. I always let her pick the song. I would stay overnight at her house on St. Olaf Avenue when Uncle Bobby moved them there after he married Judy. I remember the girls all had their own room and Donna was always neat and tidy and loved to clean. She would often come over after I was married and had kids and would help me clean my house. She loved to keep her teeth white and taking baths. She was thoughtful, kind, loving and beautiful. I could write a book with the memories we shared together. She will always have a piece of my heart. I wish she were here so I could let her know that. She will be sadly missed by those who were fortunate enough to have her in their life as I was.

Donna was my cousin, classmate, and friend. I have fond memories of the Matson Christmas party which rotated houses every year. We played games and sang Christmas carols for hours. Summer fun was held at Aunt Delores’ house where our parents played horseshoes and poker. To me, as a young girl, I felt like I had a million cousins – there were children playing everywhere !!! And, of course, Swedin family reunions were a great time at 3 Links park, where I saw relatives that I seldom got to see, and we played happily in the park all day long. It was always fun for me to play with Donna and her sisters at any and every event. Unfortunately, life moves on, people get busy, and you lose touch. I hadn’t seen Donna in several years, and hearing of her death was a shock to me. She was a beautiful person with a kind and caring heart. When I see a star twinkling brightly in the night sky, I will think of Donna and the wonderful memories she brought to our family.

Donna was a good friend to me. I do not remember the year, yet we were probably in our first year of Junior High. My memory of her is in a white shirt,a navy blue cotton button down coat and jeans. She and I had different upbringings yet we were good for each other. I wish I could remember more yet I know that we laughed a lot and talked a lot,and when I think about her, I smile. I went on her FB page and saw that she was a beautiful and had a passion for shining and sharing bright light and love. I am so sorry for her early passing and all of you that love her and will miss her immensely. Peace and Comfort to all of you, again I am so very sorry.
