Joan L. Miller, age 84, of Northfield, passed away Thursday, February 21, 2019, at Northfield Retirement Community.

Joan was born the daughter of Alfred and Ruth (Holmgren) Streitz on March 1, 1934, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She was raised in Robbinsdale where she attended and graduated from high school in 1952. In 1955, she was united in marriage to Jack Miller at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Northfield. The couple lived throughout the metro area and during that time Joan worked for Howard Johnson’s and The Racquet and Swim Club in Richfield. The couple later divorced and she was left to raise three girls on her own and Joan worked hard to provide for her girls. In 1975, the family moved to Northfield. She worked for Culligan Water Systems and after retiring, continued to work for the Northfield Retirement Community. When she had free time she spent most of it with her family, sometimes tying on a pair of roller skates and skating with her grandkids and baking with her girls, which she loved to do. Joan was always doing something to keep herself busy; she was an avid seamstress and loved to quilt. She loved spending time with her grandchildren as much as she could. According to them, she made the best popcorn around and spoiled them with dirt and worm cake. She will be remembered for being a great provider, a loving mother and grandmother who enjoyed having fun with her family.

She will be dearly missed by her daughters; Cheryl (Ron) Knapper of Becker; Linda (Jim) Gleason of Northfield; Anita (Marty) Finger of Dundas; 11 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and her siblings John (Judy) of Northfield; Jerry of Sauk Centre; Joel (Kay) of Farmington; Jeanette (Dick) Sutherland of Cannon Falls; Jeffrey (Carolyn) of LeCenter; Judy (Bryce) Gregerson of Webster, WI; Jack (Michelle) of Mankato and Jesse (Laurie Williams) of Faribault. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother Jimmy; grandson Colton Finger and great-grandson Boden Pudlick.

A prayer service will be held on Thursday, February 28, 2019 beginning at 11 AM at Bierman Funeral Home. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service in the funeral home. Interment will be at Oaklawn Cemetery in Northfield. Arrangements by Bierman Funeral Home and Crematory. biermanfuneralhome.com.
