Joseph (Joe) Smisek, age 70 of Northfield, passed away unexpectedly at home on Thursday, August 30, 2018.

Joseph Martin Smisek was born December 8, 1947, in New Prague, Minnesota, to Joseph T. and Evelyn E. (Madera) Smisek. Joe grew up in New Prague, attended the Oblates of Mary Immaculate Seminary in Carthage, Missouri, for 3 years, and returned to New Prague to graduate from high school. Later he attended Mankato State College. In 1966 Joe married the former Yvonne Pexa and the couple had 2 sons. Sadly, the marriage ended. Joe was involved in a life-threatening motorcycle accident in 1971. In 1987 Joe married the former Irene Bultman, with whom he shared a passion for fishing. Joe spent his professional career as a quality control engineer at Sheldahl Manufacturing and was a long-time member of St. Dominic Catholic Church in Northfield.

Joe was a compassionate person, who rarely complained despite a lifetime of physical pain. He was an amazing piano player, enjoyed fishing with his family, Bob Dylan songs, and watching old horror movies. He spent most Saturday’s for more than a decade with his brother Quentin writing songs and playing the piano in their family duo. After his retirement Joe spent endless hours reading and especially loved the Harry Potter series. He will be sorely missed by his family, friends and his extended Smisek/Bultman/Pexa families.

Survivors include his sons, Joseph E. Smisek of Minnetonka, Michael T. Smisek (Angie) of Faribault; grandchildren, Dillon and Maddie; his mother, Evelyn Smisek of Minnetonka; his brothers, Thomas P. (Michele) Smisek of River Falls, WI, Quentin (Nancy) Smisek of Minneapolis; his sister, Karen (Thomas) Popovich of Eden Prairie; his niece Lauren (Harper) Zwicky of Minneapolis & nephew Thomas W. Smisek of Middleton, WI; his former wife, Yvonne Smisek of Farmington; numerous beloved cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by Irene Smisek and his father Joseph T Smisek.

A visitation will be held at Church of St. Dominic in Northfield beginning at 9:00 to 11:00AM on Tuesday, September 4, 2018, followed directly by a Mass of Christian Burial and a luncheon. Interment will follow in the Calvary Cemetery, Faribault.

Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice in lieu of flowers and the family recommends you eat a Little Debbie snack cake and think about Joe.

I’m sadden to hear of Joe’s passing. I would run into Joe now and then at Cub and the Tavern, which Joe proclaimed as the “best breakfast in town”, with an occasional email or phone call. I cannot attend on Tuesday, but wished to express my sympathy.
