Some of my earliest and most precious memories are of Katie Jane Lorraine Larsen. We were little girls together, and we shared everything. I even tried to give her my baby sister once, and Katie liked the idea, but our parents wouldn’t cooperate. She was always the clean one (as in, my mom saying, why can’t you keep your clothes nice like Katie does?) Early on her mother made her clothes, including hand-knit Norwegian sweaters that were spectacular. She was my fashion guide and made many trips through the Sears and Wards catalogs with me to find school clothes. She talked me into things I wouldn’t have done otherwise, including two summers of synchronized swimming, or “sink and swim” as we called it then. She introduced me to Joan Baez and other folk singers from record albums purloined from her brother Tommy’s collection. She also loaned me Tommy’s bike so I could learn how to ride. I wonder if Tommy missed it? As I write this I’ve just come back from a hike up Gooseberry Falls. My first ever visit to the Falls was with Katie and her parents when we were 10 or 11. They loved to camp, and sometimes took me with them. We leapt off high rock walls into the pools below, and felt very brave about it. Now there are signs forbidding such activity. But Katie, I remember holding hands and throwing ourselves into the air and shrieking with joy or fear until we hit the water. And then we did it again, and again, and again. A girl never had a better best friend!

Katie and I were roommates for a couple years at Abbott Hospital School of Nursing until she fell in love and married Lloyd to enjoy her life raising her kids. We kept in touch for a while then drifted apart. I had the opportunity to see her about a year ago with Barb Blesener Gannon, another roommate. I am so glad I did drive to Northfield. It was lovely to see her and talk about our lives since nursing school. I stayed at her house on weekends occasionally during school. I always remember how precise she hung up the clothes on the line. Everything was in order…must have been her German-ness. She would have made a great nurse. My sympathy to all of you.
