Lloyd Wilton Harkness, age 87 of Northfield, passed away Tuesday, June 6, 2017 at Three Links Care Center.

Lloyd was born in rural Randolph, Minnesota on February 16, 1930 to William and May (Howland) Harkness. He was the youngest of seven children: Edwin, Francis “Fritz”, Leonard, Robert, Barbara (Bartelds), and Alice (Halverson). Lloyd grew up on the family farm located west of Northfield on North Avenue, attended Longfellow Elementary School, and went on to graduate from Northfield High School in 1948. Lloyd was an excellent athlete and participated in many sports including track, football, and Northfield’s first hockey team. In 2005, he was even inducted into the NHS Sports Hall of Fame for his contributions.

In 1950, Lloyd married Mayvis Legvold at Northfield Methodist Church. After living in the Twin Cities and working as a grain grader, the couple moved to Northfield to start a family and help his aging father on the farm. His father taught him how to work hard and how to fish, two very important aspects in Lloyd’s life that he, too, would pass down through the generations. In 1962, Lloyd and Mayvis bought their home on Saint Olaf Avenue in Northfield, where they raised all six of their children and where Lloyd lived until June of 2016. Lloyd and Mayvis owned and operated Lloyd’s Floor Service and served many in the community doing wallpaper, floor cleaning, and custodial services for several churches, banks, and local downtown establishments. He served on the Northfield Park Board for many years. Parks were extremely important to him – especially Way Park, which was right next door to him, and Lashbrook, which he helped to establish. He spent many years and dedicated hours ensuring that the parks were safe and well-maintained areas for families to enjoy for years to come.

Even after Mayvis passed away in 1995, Lloyd continued traditions of baking, gardening, and drinking coffee with friends on the front porch. Holidays were spent sharing his favorites — homemade krumkake and sugar cookies — with neighbors, friends, and relatives. In his later years he loved bird watching, whistling, singing hymns, and humming.

Lloyd was richly blessed by many who loved him and who brought him great joy, including his six children: Lea Ann Ayotte (and fiancé Gary Polzin) of Northfield; Linda (Craig) Wasner of Northfield; Paul (Nona) of Duluth; Phil (Renee) of Altura; May Beth Morris (and fiancé Mike Patnode) of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and Lisa (Randy) McDonough of Faribault; his 21 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, his many nieces and nephews; and his in-laws Margal Harkness of California, and David and Ruth Legvold of Northfield.

Lloyd was preceded in death by his loving wife, his parents, all of his siblings, infant grandson, Jay Ayotte, and infant great-grandson, Aidan Fritz Harkness.

Lloyd’s visitation will be held at Bierman Funeral Home in Northfield, MN on Wednesday, June 14, 2017 from 4-7p and also one hour prior to the service on Thursday. The service will be held at Emmaus Baptist Church in Northfield, MN on Thursday, June 15, 2017 at 11am with Reverend Abe Johnson officiating. Burial will be held at Red Rose Cemetery near Northfield. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Friends of Way Park (http://waypark.blogspot.com/) and Lashbrook Park (http://lashbrookpark.blogspot.com/).
