Marvis Canon, age 88, of Golden Valley, MN, formerly of Northfield, MN, died Wednesday, April 29, 2020 at Sunrise of Golden Valley.

Marvis Heinemann was born on December 7, 1931 in Madelia, MN to Theodore and Viola (Wolf) Heinemann. She grew up in Truman, MN. Marvis met Neal Canon while in school and they went on their first date in the ninth grade. After graduating, they both attended Mankato State Teachers College and were married in 1955.

They moved to Terre Haute, IN after Neal received his PHD, in 1964. He was a professor at Indiana State University and Marvis taught at Indiana State University Laboratory School. After the high school closed, Marvis was offered the position of librarian at the remaining K-8 school. While raising their children it was common to do things in nature. Whether it be a walk through the woods or camping.

Marvis and Neal retired in 1992 and moved to Northfield. They enjoyed their travels in Europe and playing in two bridge clubs. Marvis loved to swim, mostly at the Carleton pool.

Marvis was a gregarious, talkative, and extroverted person but family was the most important thing to her. She took great pride in her children and considered them to be her life’s work. She raised them without pushing but being supportive of their endeavors.

Marvis was loved and will be deeply missed.

Marvis is survived by her children, Karen (Tom Haigh) Canon, David (Sarah) Canon and Susan (Mike Bull) Canon; 8 grandchildren, Daniel (Rose Ren) Moy, Nicholas Moy, Neal Canon, Katherine (Jack Young) Canon, Katie Bull (Charlie Heller), Sophia Canon, Kelsey Bull and Je’Amy Bull; and sister, Marilyn (Alan) Youel.

Marvis was preceded in death by her husband Neal (2014), sweetheart of 70 years.

Memorials preferred to the Nature Conservancy, www.nature.org and Lutheran World Relief www.lwr.org or mail to PO Box 17061, Baltimore, MD 21297-1061.

A private committal service will be held for Marvis on Monday, May 4, 2020 at Valley Grove Cemetery, Nerstrand, MN.

  1. Ole Lokensgard

My father Hjalmar (“Lucky”) Lokensgard had both Marvis and Neal in his classes at Mankato State. They became lifelong friends of Lucky and my mother Rachel. I always thought of Marvis and Neal as beautiful people, educated, intelligent, kind, travelers, scholars, friends, involved, and accessible. And as time went on, my wife and I became friends with them as my parents faded and then died. We saw them at their farm. They visited Nantucket. East, west, it was always good to see Marvis and Neal, and then just Marvis at Millstream Commons in Northfield. We miss them both, beautiful people.
