Nicholas A. Vosejpka, age 35, of Hampton, formerly of Northfield, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, December 30, 2017, at Regions Hospital in St. Paul. Nick was born December 3, 1982, the son of Loren and Brenda (Backe) Vosejpka in Northfield. Here he was raised and graduated from Northfield High School in 2001. In high school, Nick worked at the Lonsdale Feed Mill and was active in FFA. He then attended South Central Technical College studying home construction and cabinetry. Nick began working for Brian Malecha Construction following college. Nick was united in marriage to Lauren Merkle on October 30, 2001, at United Methodist Church in Northfield. The couple were blessed with two beautiful children, Carter and Madison. In 2006, Nick began working at Union Pacific Rail Road and continued working there until the time of his death.

Nick was a gentle giant. He was loving, patient, smart and never got angry. He was a hard worker and very reliable. The word “no” was never a part of his vocabulary and he was always willing to help family and friends. He had a great sense of humor. Woodworking was one of Nick’s interests and he enjoyed making furniture, lamps and wooden bowls as well as other items. Most important to Nick was his family and of course his two children. He was the best Dad to them. He often referred to his daughter as his princess and good-byes with Carter consisted of a few friendly blows. Often, Nick would sit on the floor with all the kids, so he could be closer to them. Nick also enjoyed remodeling homes, fishing and reading.

He is survived by his children, Carter (11) and Madison (8); his mother Brenda (Roger) Schommer of New Prague; brothers Josh (Nicci) of Northfield; Chad of Northfield; a sister Abbie Hoffman of New Prague; his grandmother Lillian “Molly” Tupy of Northfield; former wife Lauren of Northfield and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his father Loren (2000); his grandparents Allen and Barbara “Nana” Backe, Ben Vosejpka; and step-grandfather Bernard Tupy.

So sad to see yet another fellow worker die on the job in 2017. I never met Nicholas, nor did I work with him, but as a fellow railroader I grieve his loss. Sounds like he was a fine rail. My condolences to his family, friends and co-workers.
