Ordis Marie Cakebread, age 93, of Northfield, passed away Saturday, April 13, 2019, at Northfield Retirement Community.

Ordis was born May 13, 1925, the daughter of Joseph and Hilda (Varpness) Johnson on her grandmother’s farm in Normania Township, Yellow Medicine County. She was raised in Hanley Falls, Minnesota where she graduated in 1943. She worked in Marshall, Minnesota candling eggs at an egg plant. Ordis was united in marriage to Melvin Cakebread on June 16, 1945, in Tyler, Texas. She worked as a nanny for a couple of years and with Melvin serving in the army, Ordis returned to Hanley Falls. After Melvin’s return to Minnesota, the couple lived in Bloomington and Ordis worked for Control Data. They then lived for 13 years in Apache Junction, Arizona and later moved to Northfield.

Ordis enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening and having lots of company. She loved reading as well, but over the years, her eyesight worsened and her reading became less and less. Ordis was a very caring and loving woman. She worried about everyone’s problems and tried to help the best she could. She was a great cook and was known for making the best oatmeal cookies. Above all, she was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.

She is survived by her husband of 74 years, Melvin of Northfield; a daughter Connie (Mike) Burrow of Dundas; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two sisters Doris Coash in the Twin Cities and Ethel (Warren) Johnson of Faribault. She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters Esther, Ella, and Hazel.
