Patricia Joy Fenton Surratt was born April 6, 1932, in La Porte, Indiana, to Harold and Margaret (Norris) Fenton, and raised on the Fenton Farms orchard outside of Michigan City. She graduated from Elston Senior High School in 1950, then attended the University of Indiana where she received her bachelor’s degree. She taught kindergarten from 1954-59 at La Porte Elementary, Michigan City.

On November 23, 1957, Patricia married James A. Surratt in Michigan City, Indiana. Shortly after marriage they moved to the Twin Cities, and in 1970 moved to a farm in Wanamingo. James passed away in January 2004, and in 2007 Patricia moved to Northfield.

Patricia’s favorite things to do were with her children and grandchildren encouraging them in sports, music, cultural and community organizations and events. She led by example enjoying many years as a season ticket holder to the Guthrie Theater and Minnesota Opera, was a Girl Scout and Boy Scout leader, and spent several years working for the Wanamingo Paper and then the Cannon Falls Beacon. Patricia was a longtime member of Holden Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School, spent several years on the board of the Perpich High School for the Arts, and taught piano lessons from her home. Patricia traveled with her family throughout her life, and was an avid reader and voracious learner staying active in community classes and book clubs. She was also passionate about her pets, and spent many afternoons working in her yard and garden. Patricia will be missed most for the love she had for her family, and also for her kindness, generosity, and kitchen table conversations.

Survivors include her children, Brian (Glori) of Chisholm, Susan (Ron) Roiger of Rosemount, Sheila (Mark) Pohlkamp of New Hope, Janine (Bill) Nelson of Lakeville, Teresa (Steve) Sjoquist of Maple Grove, Stacy Surratt (Brion Hybertson) of Afton, William of Northfield; 18 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her sister and brother-in-law June and Reigh Gunderson.

A service, followed by a gathering of family and friends, will be held at 1pm on November 10, 2018 at the Bierman Funeral Home in Northfield.
