Roberto Luis Vargas, age 67, of Northfield, formerly of Robbinsdale, passed away Friday, April 5, 2019, at Mayo Clinic Hospital-Saint Mary’s Campus.

Robert was born July 22, 1951, the son of Luis and Stephanie (Santiago) Vargas in New Orleans, Louisiana. He moved with his family to New York where he attended Evander Childs High School graduating in 1971. He furthered his studies at St. Olaf College where he received his bachelor’s degree in Philosophy and Theology. At St. Olaf he cultivated his love of music, philosophy, and a wide range of intellectual and spiritual pursuits that became the things he held dear and nourished his soul for the rest of his life.

In 1983, he celebrated the birth of his one and only son, Jason. He later attended the University of Wisconsin where he received his master’s degree in Special Education. Robert began his professional career as a guard at Stillwater State Prison. Later he worked in realty, financial investing and teaching. He was united in marriage to Rebecca Manganiello on October 23, 2010. The couple made their home in Robbinsdale, but always felt close to Northfield. Rebecca was also a graduate of St. Olaf, so the couple moved to Northfield in 2017.
Robert had many passions in life, including the nurturing of a life long love of learning. He was a voracious reader, covering a wide range of subjects, including philosophy, politics, astrophysics and architectural and interior design. His love of life was expressed in his delight in babies and his enjoyment of container gardening. He had a profound appreciation of the beauty and power of music and surrounded himself with it every day of his life.

Robert will be remembered for his kind and gracious nature. An encounter with Robert always left the other person with the feeling that something had happened. His belief system was based on a few very simple but profoundly meaningful principles; kindness, politeness, and graciousness. It is hard to put Robert’s sense of graciousness into words, but he approached people with affability and respect, valued community, and aspired to live each moment with a generous spirit.

He is survived by his wife Rebecca of Northfield; his son Jason (Casandra) Vargas of Hastings; his sister Milagro Vargas (Tom Manoff) of Eugene, OR; his brother Benito Vargas of Bronx, NY; his step-mother Soledad Gomez of Bronx, NY; his mother Stephanie Fisher of Miami, FL; two grandsons Kyle and Tristan and a granddaughter Charlotte due in April. He was preceded in death by his father.

Funeral services will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church on Monday, April 15, 2019, beginning at 11 AM with the Reverend Pam Fickenscher officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service in the church. Burial will be at Oaklawn Cemetery in Northfield. Arrangement by Bierman Funeral Home and Crematory. biermanfuneralhome.com.
