Zona Gale Bickel died of natural causes in the Cardinal Unit at Northfield Retirement Community on January 5, 2018.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 20, 2018 with visitation one hour prior at the Northfield Retirement Community Chapel, 900 Cannon Valley Drive, with Pastor Dan Christ officiating. Interment will follow the service at Oaklawn Cemetery, Northfield. Memorials are preferred to the Moravian Church in Northfield.

Zona was born November 10, 1927, to Charles and Karen Sanford in Dundas. The family moved to Northfield and married Richard (Dick) Bickel on April 26, 1947. They farmed until 1957 and then moved into town when Dick accepted a position with the Northfield Water Department. Dick worked for the water department for a couple of years and then became a Police Officer with Northfield Police Department. He finished his career working for the Rice County Sheriff’s Department. Zona had a variety of jobs in the community, her favorite was as a taxi driver for 8 years. It gave her the opportunity to meet a wonderful array of people. Zona was known for her gift of conversation and her warm heart. She could start a conversation with a complete stranger and end up with a lifelong friend.

When Dick retired from the Rice County Sheriff’s Dept. in 1981, the couple moved to Las Vegas where they lived for twelve years before returning to Northfield for health reasons. They loved the warm climate, but missed their family in Minnesota. Upon their return to Northfield in 1995, Zona moved into an apartment at the Northfield Retirement Center Manor and Dick was admitted to the Care Center. Zona loved living in her Manor apartment surrounded by many friends and a wonderful staff. She had endless opportunity to play cards, which was her favorite pastime. She loved to joke that she was born with a deck of cards in her hand. She lived in the Manor for 20 years before moving to Parkview East in 2015.

Zona was a lifelong member of the Northfield Moravian Church and for all of her life nothing gave her more pleasure than being part of that worshipping community. Each and every member of that congregation filled Zona’s heart with joy.

She was preceded in death by her husband Dick; her parents; her two brothers; and one sister. She is survived by her two children Jim (Judy) Bickel of Sun City, Arizona and Beverly of Northfield; grandchildren Isaac Chitwood, Karen Hinz-Hill, Matt (Carolyn) Bickel, and Kylie (Peter) Kuhlman; great grandchildren Celia and Cameron Bickel, Calvin and Sylvie Kuhlman, and Raymond, Finnegan, and Ivan Hill.
