Dorothy Dawn Dyson Bolton, age 88 of Northfield, passed away on Tuesday, January 2015 at the Northfield Retirement Center. Funeral Services will be 11:00 am Saturday, January 17th at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Northfield with burial at Oaklawn Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday at the Church 1 hour prior to Services. She is preceded in death by her parents Robert and Mary (Gould) Dyson, her brother Robert Dyson, her former husband Frederick Bolton and her beloved granddaughter Thea Abigail Bestul. Dorothy Bolton was born in Devils Lake, North Dakota on November 22, 1926. She attended public schools in Devils Lake, graduating from high school in 1944. She attended Macalester College in St. Paul, MN graduating Summa Cum Laude in 1949 with a Bachelor of Arts degree and a major in economics and married shortly thereafter.

After her graduation from Macalester, Dorothy worked as a Legal Secretary in St. Paul for future Supreme Court Justice Warren Burger. She left her job in order to raise her three children David, Lisa and Jennifer. When her youngest child started school, Dorothy resumed working as a secretary at St. Olaf in the Philosophy Department, where she was employed for more than 20 years. She was instrumental in working for the Kierkegaard Library, where she spent many hours typing Dr. Hong’s translations of the Danish philosopher’s writings.

Dorothy kept busy both before and after her retirement providing daycare for her grandchildren, volunteering at the Northfield Historical Society, sewing, knitting, participating in a play reading group, working jigsaw puzzles and reading. She was an active member of St. John’s Church, being a Stephen’s Minister and attending Circle Meetings. She enjoyed travel and spent time in Mexico, England, Europe and Greece. She enjoyed taking her grandchildren to week long programs at Wolf Ridge Environmental Center.

Dorothy is survived by her son David Foster Bolton, wife Patsy and their children Frank and Walter Foster-Bolton; her daughter Lisa Strauch, husband Neil and children Nicole, Lauren and Michael Young; her daughter Jennifer Bestul, husband Terry and their children Madeline and William; and great granddaughters Elliot and Riley Matzky, children of Nicole Young. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother, and a true friend to others. Her loving kindness and generous spirit will be forever be missed by all.
