They enjoyed traveling and camping and snow birding in Arizona. In 2001 they moved to Oracle, Arizona and called that home. Irene really enjoyed quilting and made over 50 quilts to give away. In the spring of 2015 Irene started battling leukemia. She spent 34 days in the hospital and was diagnosed cancer free. Irene and Don came to Minnesota to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary and the leukemia returned while they were here.
