Leota J. Zimmerman, age 99, of Stanton passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 8, 2016, at Olathe Medical Center’s Hospice House, Olathe, Kansas.

Leota, known to her family as Loty, was born April 22, 1916, in Sciota Township, Minnesota the daughter of Charles and Hazel (Pruett) Messner and fourth of five children. Her father passed away when Leota was six years old leaving her mother to raise five children during the depression on a rural Northfield farm.  She attended and graduated from Northfield High School.  Leota went three miles down the road and married the love of her life Melbourne Zimmerman on June 22, 1938.  They farmed near Stanton for the next 34 years.  They enjoyed traveling to different parts of the country to visit their son Gary and his family as Gary’s job took him throughout the United States.  Mel died in January 2010.

Leota had been a member of the Stanton United Methodist Church since 1938 where she was an active member and taught Sunday school for many years.  She loved the company of her church family.  She enjoyed having friends and family over to visit.  When you came to Leota’s home you could find her meeting you at the door and offering you a homemade cookie from a giant cookie plate or possibly a homemade caramel roll fresh from the oven.

Leota is survived by her son Gary (and Kathy) Zimmerman of Olathe; five grandchildren Gary (and Docie) Zimmerman Jr. in Oklahoma; Michelle (and Jeff) Leifert of Olathe; Chadd Zimmerman of Lee’s Summit, MO; Suzanne (and David) Thompson of Olathe; and Jeffrey (and Abigail) Zimmerman of Olathe; and nine great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Mel; her parents; two brothers and two sisters.

Visitation will be held Saturday, March 12, 2016, from 10 AM to 11 AM at the Stanton United Methodist Church.  Funeral services for Leota will be held on Saturday, March 12, 2016, at 11 AM at Stanton United Methodist Church with the Reverend Arthur Hill officiating.  Burial will be at the Stanton Cemetery, Stanton, Minnesota.  Memorials are preferred to the Stanton United Methodist Church.
