She received her education from Randolph Public School and for her senior year transferred to Northfield High School, graduating with the class of 1953. On March 27, 1954, Shirley was united in marriage to Herbert Petersen and together they raised 7 children and shared 61 years of marriage. They made their home in Northfield until 1957 when they moved to a farm in rural Northfield. In 1976 they built a home in rural Castle Rock where they lived until 2010. Shirley and Herb owned and operated the Castle Gardens Supper Club from 1969 – 1973, later buying it back in 1979.

Shirley was actively involved as a 4-H leader. She held local and district offices with the American Legion Auxiliary and was a member of the Tuesday Noon Bowling League. Shirley enjoyed flowers, gardening, jigsaw puzzles and decorating for the holidays.
