Donald Luverne Haugen was born on January 5, 1931, in Warsaw Township to Thomas and Tilda (Holt) Haugen. He attended Northfield High School and went to work on the family farm after his education. Don married Marilyn Millam on August 2, 1952, in Milaca, MN. Don had just been drafted into the Army and they spent the first few years of their marriage at Fort Eustis in Virginia. Following Don’s discharge, they moved to a farm near Dennison where they ran a dairy farm. In 1961, they moved from the farm to Dennison, where Don worked at the Dennison Grain Elevator until retirement.
He and Marilyn loved to travel, making taking trips to Norway, Germany, Scotland, Jamaica, California, and Hawaii. He loved spending time with family and grandchildren, attending as many of their sporting events and school activities as he could. One of his favorite games to play with family and friends was euchre. Gentle, kind and compassionate were words that were often used to describe Don. Despite his calm personality, he was known to play his fair share of practical jokes on friends and family. His approach to life should teach us all a lesson.
Don passed away on Thursday, February 21, 2019, at the age of 88 at the Kenyon Sunset Home. He is survived by his daughter Michelle (Travis) Roethler of Nerstrand; sons Dan (Diane) of Plymouth, Bryan (Laura) of Dennison, Terry (Margaret) of Dennison; grandchildren Jaime (Nathan) Annis, Greg (Kim) Haugen, Nick Haugen, Tonya (Gary) Sauer, Crystal Haugen, Johnna and Allie Harmer, Emma, Thomas and Molly Roethler; eight great-grandchildren; sister LouAnn Lervik, other family members; and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Marilyn in 2017, his son Gregory Haugen in 1978, brothers Russell Haugen and Herbert Haugen, sisters Valdine Engeseth, Hazel Dammer, Meredith Lien, Norma Iverson, and his parents.
