It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of our beloved brother and uncle. John VanBergen, age 64 of Northfield, MN, passed away peacefully the evening of Thursday, January 31, 2019 following a courageous battle with cancer requiring a brief stay at the Northfield Long Term Care Center of the Northfield Hospital.

John (Johnny) was born in 1954 at St. Lucas Hospital in Faribault, MN to Gerry and Eva (VanZuilen) VanBergen. The family moved to the Northfield area not long after. John attended St. Dominic’s catholic school graduating from 8th grade before attending the Northfield Senior High School. He went on to attend and graduate from the Milwaukee School of Engineering with a degree in electrical engineering. He spent his career primarily in the Northfield area, working at Sheldahl, Northfield Freezing Systems and most recently Aurora Pharmaceuticals where he met and became friends with a great group of people who cared for him as he grew weaker. John also served as a Greenvale Township election judge for a number of years.

John was definitely an animal lover – mostly dogs and cats. He could often be seen walking many of the dogs of the neighborhood dropping each one off at home as they passed by their respective homes as he made his way home with Rusty (or Suzy). John always welcomed his sisters’ dogs in when they needed a place to hang out. John also loved helping people – giving rides to those who needed it, building things and always fixing things for family, friends and his wonderfully close network of neighbors (who also would do anything for John). John also loved his niece and nephews, sisters and brothers in law; they will all miss him dearly, but know that he is now in heaven with our Lord.

John is survived by sisters, Martina (Adrian) Hagen of Faribault and Aggie (Rick) Pavek of Northfield, niece and nephews, Eric (fiancé Anna Showers), Mariah (Wade) Ihlenfeld, Danny and Johnny Pavek; many very close cousins in the area and in the Netherlands, and aunt Therese VanZuilen of Claremont. He was preceded in death by his sister, Anna and his parents and many other close family members.

The family would like to send a special thank you to the Northfield Hospital staff and most especially to the Long Term Care Center staff (and residents) for their kindness, support and love. Donations preferred to Relay for Life Rice County, Retrievers Lost Dog Team (The Retrievers) or Rescue 55021.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 6, 2019 at the Church of St. Dominic in Northfield, MN. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Northfield. Visitation will be held 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 5, 2019, at Bierman Funeral Home & Crematory of Northfield. Visitation will continue Wednesday morning at church from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.

I am so sorry to hear of Johns death…John was a very good man and I knew him slighty in his time at Sheldahl. He is indeed a man who will be missed by all who knew him.May he rest in peace with the Lord.

Wow, so sorry to hear of John’s death. He was such a kind and caring man. He was always looking on the bright side of things. How fortunate that I got to see him last year at my uncle’s funeral. Our family sends you our sympathy and prayers. I know how close you all were, and how difficult this loss is for you. God bless you and know that I have thought about you all week. (I am unable to come to Northfield because of the snowstorm, but perhaps I can stop by sometime for a visit.)

I was so sorry to hear of John ‘s passing. Johnny as his dad would always call him and I guess everyone did, was someone I did not see often, but when I did we had many good stories to tell. I got to know the family when Gerry worked at Carleton and Aggie, Martina and Anna were young children. Johnny was a great big brother to them and very caring. I’m sure that quality was a part of his whole life as I read from his obituary.
I have thought about the family everytime I pass the family farmstead west of Waterford. I hope you all can find the strength to make it through this difficult time. My though are with you all.
