Opal Arvilla Bollenbach Wolf, 100 years old, passed away suddenly on September 13, 2018 at Abbott Northwestern Hospital.  Opal was born on November 8, 1917 to Milton and Florence Turner Bollenbach.  She attended Nerstrand Public School, graduated from Kenyon High School in 1935, and graduated from St. Olaf College in 1939 with a teaching major in History and English.  While at St. Olaf, she studied choir directing under Professor F. Melius Christianson and then directed choirs, played piano and organ, and directed Christmas dramas in the Nerstrand Methodist Church for over 75 years.  Upon graduation from St. Olaf, she taught school in Annendale, Minnesota, until her marriage to Kermit Wolf on June 4, 1941.  They initially moved to Montgomery, MN, where Kermit taught Math, Chemistry, and Physics.  They also lived in Waterville, MN, and in 1956 moved to Northfield, MN, where both Kermit and Opal taught in the public school system.  Initially a homebound tutor and substitute teacher, Opal completed her teaching career in special education.

Opal was the granddaughter of Charles and Hannah Knopf Bollenbach, and Sydney and Minnie Schroeder Turner.  Her great-great grandparents were early Nerstrand pioneers, Adam and Louise Clump Knopf. Opal was a world traveler and delighted in learning and experiencing the many lands and people of all countries and cultures. Opal was a faithful member of the Society of Mayflower Descendants, the Josiah Edson Chapter NSDAR, the Order of Eastern Star, the Nerstrand United Methodist Women, the Rice County Historical Society, and other civic organizations. After becoming a widow in 1977, she tenderly cared for her parents on the family farm, along with the gentleman who came to work for her family when she was a little girl. Opal committed her life to Christ at an early age and made Jesus her first love.  With that as her foundation, she met each challenge with dignity and grace.  She loved completely and lavishly upon her beloved soulmate, family, friends and community.  She was truly the “Proverbs 31 Woman”.  Opal’s life was an example of selfless service, integrity, and excellence in all that she did.  The life that she lived provided the legacy that she has left behind for all who knew and loved her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Milton and Florence Turner Bollenbach, her husband, Kermit M. Wolf, son-in-law Reverend Richard Vork, and beloved aunts, uncles, and cousins.  She is survived by her children, Faye Vork of Northfield, Paul (Susan) Wolf of Northfield, and Lois (Rolf) Enger of Colorado Springs, CO; grandchildren, Diane (Robert) Enger, The Rev. Linda (Craig) Bollenbach, Tiffany Enger, Holly (Joseph) Walker, Christina (Tim) Lewis-Wolf, Noelle Wolf, and Heather Wolf; great-grandchildren, The Rev. Jonathon (Anika) Enger, Kari (Josh) Kaus, Kathryn Walker, Caroline Walker, and Evelyn Lewis-Wolf; and great-great grandchildren, Levi and Josiah Enger, and Savannah and Grace Kaus.

Committal service will be on Thursday, September 20, 2018, 9:30 AM at Nerstrand EUB Cemetery, followed by a Celebration of Opal’s life at Nerstrand United Methodist Church on Thursday, September 20, 2018 at 11:00 A.M.  Visitation will be Wednesday, September 19, 2018, from 4-8 PM at Bierman Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the EUB Cemetery Fund, the Nerstrand United Methodist Church, and the Rice County Habitat for Humanity, or to a charity of your choice. So sad to hear of Opal’ s passing. She worked very hard to bring the best music to our church. I specifically remember the Easter Cantada she led. She was one of the “all time greats!
