Richard J. Hullett, age 89, of Monticello, formerly of Northfield, passed away Sunday, October 22, 2017, at St. Benedict’s Senior Community in Monticello. Dick was born the son of Sylvester and Mary (Yung) Hullett on April 18, 1928, in Lakeville. There he was raised and graduated from Lakeville High School. While in high school, Dick played varsity football on the offensive line and once played with three cracked ribs. He loved the game of football and wasn’t going to miss a game. Following school, he worked for area farmers doing custom farming. He worked for the Ford Motor Plant in St. Paul before renting a farm in the Lakeville area.

He was united in marriage to Enez Nelson on October 22, 1949, at Holy Childhood Catholic Church in St. Paul. They made their home near Lakeville until 1955, when they moved to Castle Rock and continued farming. Dick was very involved with his family including family camping trips, and 4H where he coached the Bright Stars Junior softball team. In 1960, he began a career with Brockway Glass in Rosemount for the next 25 years. He then went on to work for Cannon Equipment before retirement. After selling their home in Castle Rock, the couple built a beautiful lake home on Lake Vermillion near Buyck, Minnesota. Enie passed away November 24, 2003, shortly after being diagnosed with Glioblastoma. Dick continued to live on Lake Vermilion spending his winters in Arizona and Florida. Dick was diagnosed with Alzheimers in 2016. Once unable to stay at the lake, Dick lived with family in Becker, Minnesota before entering St. Benedict’s Senior Community. Dick passed away on what would have been the couple’s 68th wedding anniversary.

Dick was a farmer through and through. He loved the outdoors, hunting, and going on fishing trips to Canada. He rarely sat still and was always working on a project. He had the heart of a teddy bear even though he could be stubborn and tough. He was a jack of all trades and could build anything. He especially liked welding and metalwork. His unique sense of humor and quick wit made many scratch their heads not knowing whether to believe him or not. Enie and Dick enjoyed bowling, playing cards with friends, and traveling. Not bad for a country boy meeting a city girl on a blind date.

He is survived by three daughters Deb Hullett of Oregon, WI; Rebecca (Michael) Nolan of St. Louis, MO; Janelle (Brian) Johnson of St. Paul; two sons David (Cynthia) of Becker; Laurence (RoseMary) of Shakopee; six grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, a step great-grandchild and twin brothers Thomas and Terrance of Lakeville. He was preceded in death by his wife and his parents.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 26, 2017, beginning at 10:30 AM at Church of St. Dominic in Northfield. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service in the church. Burial will be at All Saints Cemetery in Lakeville. Memorials are preferred to the Alzheimer Foundation or St. Benedict’s Senior Community in memory of Dick.
